We are happy to announce the launch of “Loaves and Fishes,” a series of online courses designed to bring UHL’s signature Biblical scholarship to those outside of the Holy Land. Its aim is to "provide food for the heart and mind in our very busy lives".
These courses are ideal for lifelong learners who are hungry and thirsty to find out more about the world of the Bible in an approachable format. Designed for enrichment and ease of access, "Loaves and Fishes" courses are shorter in duration than semester-long credit courses and do not have the pressures of exam or paper writing

This course explores the first-century Jewish context of Jesus, the Gospels and the New Testament as a whole. Emphasis is placed on the fact that Second Temple Judaism was not simply a shell that nascent Christianity later outgrew but rather that the two remain organically connected. To accomplish these tasks, this course will examine a wide range of topics including such subjects as atonement and ritual purity in the Hebrew Bible, the literature and theology of Second Temple Judaism, and the place of Jesus and his followers within Second-Temple Judaism.

Hebrew is a unique language. It is the language of God's Chosen people and the language of the Old Testament. It is also the only language to resurrect itself after having died out as a spoken language. This course, over 8 lessons, will introduce the student to this fascinating language. The focus in each class will be three-fold: understanding the fundamentals of Biblical Hebrew and how they differ from English; obtaining a better understanding of the Old Testament; beginning the process of learning Modern Hebrew.
