1006-C Pauline Literature and Theology
Instructor: C. Pfann, M.A.
Credits: 3 academic credits
Day and Time: TBA
Instruction Language: English with Chinese translation
Tuition: TBA
It is no exaggeration to suggest that outside of Jesus, no single individual in the first generation of Christians has had a greater impact on the church’s thought and practice than Paul. His letters constitute more than half of the New Testament books. In this course, these letters are explored, bearing in mind that they reflect one side in a dynamic conversation between Paul and his congregations. Themes such as the creation of the "one new man" (i.e., the breaking down of ethnic and societal barriers in the church), the law, the Jews, and the gentiles in the early church, Christian expression in a pagan society, Paul and his opponents, Paul’s missionary strategy, the character of our existence in Christ, and the growth of Paul as a pastor, among others are explored.

Tuition: TBA
Instruction Language: English with Chinese translation
In this exploration into the relations between Christianity and Judaism we will examine the reality in late antiquity at the birth of Christianity and continue to survey the relationship as it became dominant. Christian theological attitudes towards Judaism (e.g. supersessionism) will be presented and their painful implications (including expulsions, blood libels and the inquisition) studied. Jewish evaluations of Christianity will also be surveyed. We will conclude with an examination of the positive, post-holocaust, developments in Christian-Jewish relations. Readings will be taken from historical and theological literature and students will read William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice.
