This course focuses on acquiring the ability to read basic Biblical text. Readings will be selected from various books in the Tanach, with instruction in issues of grammar, syntax, and lexicography. This course will examine the daily, weekly, monthly and annual celebrations and ritual practices of Jewish life. Special attention will be given to the formation of Jewish Festivals from Bible to Rabbinic culture, including some elements of liturgical developments as well.

A survey of the Gospel and Epistles of John with a focus on the external and internal controversies faced by this early believing community will be studied. The goal is to familiarize the student with the content of the Gospel and Epistles of John, their theology, the sociology of the early church reflected in these writings, and the major approaches to their interpretation.
