Christian Pilgrimage to the Holy Land:
A Database on CD-ROM

In response to an invitation from the Government of Israel, CSEC/UHL compiled a database on Christian pilgrimage, released on CD-ROM by the Israel Government Ministry of Tourism in Fall 1999. The CD, entitled Christian Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, is an extensive database containing pertinent information on more than ninety Christian confessions and denominations throughout the world. The application provides important historical overviews of the various Christian denominations and sects designed to provide a better understanding of the needs of individual Christian groups visiting the Holy land.
The main features of the database include:
A graphic, interfaced map of the Christian World.
Profiles of individual countries with a breakdown of the Christian population by denomination.
An interfaced, history tree of the Church tracing its growth and development over the centuries.
Brief histories of each denomination featured in the database.
Creedal statements of each denomination.
A graphic depiction of the hierarchies of the denominations.
The ability to conduct a search from any part of the database.
A glossary of important Christian terms and titles of leaders.
The facility to tailor-make an itinerary by selecting the desired denomination, country and price range.
A list of sites in Israel of interest to the Christian pilgrim, with descriptions, photo, hours open to the public, and indication of special interest to various Christian groups.
A print function for the maps, addresses, and itineraries.
Etiquette guidelines for addressing Christian leaders.
A directory of Christian leaders worldwide, from the diocese level and above.
A list of Christian educational and media organizations.
Plans are underway to update the database in the near future. The update will include:
The profile of Christianity in the countries not covered in phase 1.
The inclusion of additional smaller Christian groups throughout the world.
The addition of numerous short articles on the history and phenomenology of pilgrimage.
An even more versatile, itinerary-creating function.
