A Glimpse at Four UHL/CSEC Alumni

These UHL/CSEC graduates indicate the directions our students have moved towards after their time in Jerusalem:

Professor Curtis M. Hutt, MA, 1992.

Curtis Hutt is a 1992 graduate of the Center for the Study of Early Christianity/University of the Holy Land where he wrote his dissertation on gender in the Gospel of Thomas. Since then, he has worked with UHL on several projects - including several related to the Dead Sea Scrolls and Nazareth Village. In 2007, he received a Ph.D. in Religion and Critical Thought at Brown University. His dissertation was on the ethics of historical belief. In addition to being a trained historian of early Christianity, Curtis teaches courses in philosophy, the anthropology of religion, historiography, and comparative religious ethics. His latest work is on the "money-changer" agrapha commonly attributed to Jesus and Paul until the sixth century C.E. and the characterization of Christian women in the Pseudo-Clementine literature. Curtis is teaching graduate courses at UHL in the Fall semester.

Jan Karnis, MA 1999.

Jan continues to make his home in Israel, together with his wife Janice (an editor for the Dead Sea Scrolls Publication Project) and their son Simon. Jan has pursued a career in the media. He produces short news reports on events in Israel of interest to the Christian broadcasters in the States and works as a free-lance film producer for specialized Christian organizations. Our promotional video was produced, filmed, scripted, and edited by Jan and we are very grateful.

Dr. Yuzo Morimoto, M.A. 1997.

Yuzo is Pastor of Nara Seiwa Church of the Nazarene near Kyoto. He has successfully pursued his doctoral studies at California Pacific School of Theology and is currently helping to develop UHL's Japanese Extension program. His wife Ikuko, who was a Continuing Education student at UHL, is pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, having completed her theological studies at Japan Nazarene Theological Seminary.

Fr. Richard van der Water, MA, 1996.

Rick successfully completed his Ph.D. studies at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. His dissertation is an exploration of the similarities and dissimilarities between the Man of Lies in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Judas in the New Testament. Rick, who is fluent in Arabic, returned to the Holy Land to pastor in an Arab Christian community in Jibneh.
